Chandigarh, Nov 4: The Postgraduate Department of Hindi at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, in collaboration with Haryana Sahitya and Sanskriti Akademi, organised ‘Abhivyakti’- a Hindi Ghazal programme that beautifully blended learning and literary expression. The event comprised a workshop on Hindi Ghazal followed by a Ghazal Goshti, creating a rich confluence of scholarship and creativity. The event was graced by Dr. Madhav Kaushik, President, Rashtriya Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, as the Chief Guest, and Prof. Ashok Kumar, Chairperson, Department of Hindi, Panjab University, as the Special Guest. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Rajendra Toki, a renowned writer. The Hindi Ghazal Goshti featured captivating performances by celebrated ghazal writers and poets Dr. Madhav Kaushik, Dr. Balvendra Singh, Dr. Aneesh Garg (Vice President, Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi), Dr. Kamal Puri, and Ms. Rakhi Alp. In his enlightening session, Mr. Rajendra Toki elaborated on the distinction between nazm and ghazal, traced the ghazal’s Persian origins, and discussed its evolution within the Urdu and Hindi traditions. He highlighted the experiments undertaken in ghazal writing, Dushyant Kumar’s pivotal contribution to Hindi ghazal, and the deep undercurrents of romanticism, spirituality, and philosophy embedded in the genre. Emphasising the social relevance of Hindi ghazal as its outstanding characteristic, he explained its technical aspects, introducing the audience to key terms such as kaafiya, radeef, misra, matla, makta, and wazan. Melodious ghazal renditions by students set the tone for an immersive literary experience. During the ghazal goshti, the ghazal writers’ evocative compositions enthralled the audience. Officiating Principal Ms. Neena Sharma commended the initiative, emphasising that promoting literature and culture through such programmes is vital in today’s times to sustain India’s rich linguistic and artistic heritage.
