Congress has edge in Jammu, BJP may sweep Udhampur

AD SINGH
Jammu, May 14: Despite winning five assembly seats in recent assembly elections in Jammu BJP is not likely to present a fair show in the Jammu-Poonch constituency but is likely to win back its old favorite Kathua-Udhampur seat from Congress.
As per the exit polls Congress is having an edge over BJP in the Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha constituency whereas, the condition is vice-a-versa at the Kathua-Udhampur seat. At the Jammu-Poonch contest the Amarnath land row factor doesn’t seems to be giving Leela Karan Sharma a strong public following this time and the unexpected candidate from BJP which even produced some controversies in its party doesn’t seems to be left behind in the run by the congress counterpart. The Congress candidate who already had a strong candidature on this seat was further benefited as after the NC-Congress coalition in the State assembly National Conference did not place any candidate on this seat and rather supported the Congress candidate further as the Congress- NC are ruling on 9 out of the 18 assembly seats under this Lok Sabha constituency Madan Lal Sharma will definitely be the benefited candidate. Further the challenge to the last Member Parliament on this seat was reduced as PDP which had a potential of sweeping away 1.5 lac votes in the Poonch-Rajouri region lost its share by fielding a weak candidate from Jammu against the strong congress candidate and all these vote was been captured by Madan Lal Sharma in the absence of National Conference. Even in the Jammu West, one of the biggest assembly constituencies, the position of Congress was strengthen with the union of Surinder Singh Shingari who was a strong independent candidate during the assembly election.
In the Kathua-Udhampur-Doda contest Dr. Nirmal Singh who though presented a tough competition but could not challenge the regime of Raman Bhalla at the Gandhi Nagar constituency in the assembly elections may win back the old favorite BJP seat of Kathua-Udhampur-Doda. The Kathua-Udhampur seat which was won by Ch. Lal Singh from BJP by defeating Chaman Lal Gupta in the last Lok Sabha elections seems to be rolling back towards BJP. Lal Singh who recently faced a heavy setback in the recent assembly elections may have to suffer another setback in these elections due to the low poll turnout at the congress favored Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban pockets even in which PDP turned successful in sweeping a significant share. BJP has no doubt managed to earn back its vote bank in the Kathua region especially the Hiranagar and Basholi pockets and the Amarnath land row factor has somewhere worked for it especially in the Kathua-Udhampur region. The Udhampur region where JKNPP faired remarkably in the last assembly election turned up well for BJP.
