| World Telecom Day celebrations at MIET | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 15- On the occasion of World Telecom Day being celebrated on May 17, the Model Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET), Jammu today organized a Seminar on the topic ‘Latest trends in Engineering’ which was attended by the students and faculty members of primarily Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering. Painting and Rangoli compensations were held as part of the celebrations. The World Telecom Day is celebrated to commemorate the beginning of the telecom era in the world. On this day 144 years ago, twenty European countries met in Paris and formed an organization called ‘International Telegraph Union’ to give boost to the telegraph technology as the telephones were not invented by then. Later, in 1932, when telephony had taken roots in most of the countries, this organization was renamed as ‘International Telecom Union’. On May 17 1969, this Union decided to celebrate May 17 as the World Telecom Day, primarily to commemorate its origin in 1865. Since then, this day is being celebrated in most of the countries by way of organizing various activities connected with Telecommunications. Dr. Arun K Gupta, the Chairman MIER Group of Institutions has always encouraged celebrations of such prestigious days to commemorate their importance and also to instill in students the necessity of research in these fields. Dr Renu Gupta, Director MIET has been giving all the help in organization of such events. R.K.Kaul, General Manager Telecom District, BSNL, was the Chief Guest on this occasion. In his inaugural address, he highlighted the importance of telecommunications and gave out the efforts BSNL is putting in to meet the aspirations of the users. He informed the gathering that this year, BSNL has selected the theme of ‘Protecting our children in Cyber Space’.
