Agrometeorology Section, organise “Farmer awareness cum wheat distribution programme”

Jammu, Nov 12: Agrometeorology Section, SKUAST-J under the aegis of Dr. B.N.Tripathi, Honˈble Vice Chancellor and guidance of Prof. S.K. Gupta, Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu organized one day “Farmer awareness cum wheat distribution programme” at Research Farm, SKUAST-J, Chatha on 12th November, 2025. Prof. S.K. Gupta, Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu was the Chief Guest on the occasion. In this programme the total 225 farmers (male and female) participated. The main objective of this programme was to aware farmers community about the climate changes and its impact on rabi season crops and to improve the socio-economic status of the economically weaker section specially SC & ST by distribute the high yielding wheat seed (var. DBW-187).
The programme was preceded by Dr. Mahender Singh, Chief Scientist and Incharge AICRPAM, who welcomed the gathering and discussed about weather based farm operation in rabi season crops and also brief to develop human resources through specifically providing adequate agricultural education about the climate and weather to the farmers. He encouraged the farmers to take more and more benefits participation in such type of programmes.
Prof. S.K. Gupta, Director Research, Chief Guest, highlighted the various activities undertaken by the University for the Welfare of the farmer’s community for boosting their income from various agricultural enterprises. He stressed the farmer community to come forward regarding their agricultural related problems. He emphasized farmers to take maximum benefit of weather based agro-advisory services rendered by Agrometeorology Section, SKUAST – Jammu.
Dr. Amrish Vaid, Director Extension, Guest of Honour, informed the farmers about the latest technological advancements, improved cultivation techniques and government initiatives taken for sustainable and profitable farming.
Dr. Bodu Ram Bazaya, Chief Scientist Weed Management explained the farmers about effective weed management in different rabi crops without harssening the quality of soil and crops. He emphasized the farmers for applying optimum dose and timely application of weedicide for getting maximum benefits to achieve economic and ecological goals with the least efforts.
Dr. Tuhina Dey, Prof. and Head, Division of Plant Breeding apprised about the benefits of distributed Wheat variety viz., DBW-187 (a popular timely sown irrigated wheat variety) which have good yield potential 50-60 q/ha. He further made aware farmers about latest high yielding varieties released by SKUAST-Jammu as well as focused on cultivation of climate and disease resistant varieties of rabi season crops.
Dr. Vijay Bahadur, Chief Scientist, Plant Pathology briefed the farmers regarding management of insects/pests causing huge damages to Agriculture and Horticulture crops. He also explained farmers various location specific integrated/composite farming systems to enhance agriculture productivity that makes farm sector more productive, sustainable, remunerative and climate resilient.
Dr. Rohit Sharma, Technical Officer (Agromet), AMFU, Rajouri highlighted the importance of Agromet Advisory services in day today agriculture activities. He motivated the farmers to make maximum use of Meghdoot, Mausam and Damini mobile apps for timely and effective use of AABs.
Mr. Dharamvir, AO, Shesh Narayan Kumwat, Ph.D. Scholar and Romika,M.Sc student of Agrometeorology Section also participated in the programme. Janak Raj and Harvinder also help to organize the event. Dr. Charu Sharma, YP-II, AICRPAM-NICRA Project presented the vote of thanks and appreciated the woman farmers for their participation.
