Early Times Report
Srinagar May 15
Jammu and Kashmir Government has decided to put a partial ban on use of polythene in the state and sought cooperation from the people to make it successful.
"Initially the ban on use of polythene bags would be imposed at health resorts in the state. Rules would be modified shortly for the same," Chief Secretary S S Kapur said at the flagging off ceremony of Water Pollution Awareness Campaign-cum-Rally here.
Kapur said it was encouraging that state Agro-Industries has agreed to provide eco-friendly bags to replace polythene. The chief secretary also said that a ban would also be put on disposing off non-biodegradable wastes in water bodies.
However, he said, unless people cooperate to enforce these laws, there is little chance of success. Further maintaining that people of the state are major stakeholders in restoring its pristine glory, Kapur called for their cooperation to save the world famous Dal lake.
"A headway has been made in this regard in the form of ongoing de-weeding process to clean the catchment areas of the lake," Mr Kapur said.
Highlighting the importance of both Dal Lake and River Jhelum, the chief secretary said, efforts are on to persuade the Center to provide necessary funding for preservation of these water bodies.
He asserted that people even can make some investment individually for preserving both the water-bodies and to play an active role in conservation of Forest and ecological balance in nature.
