| Contestants confident yet nervous | | Over 1000 cops to guard counting in Jammu, Kathua | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 15: They are exuding confidence of their win, but the key contestants have their fingers crossed as counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections begins early Saturday Some contenders who contested the two seats of Jammu region in the Lok Sabha elections are confident of their win, while others are hoping to get by with a little help from god, as the country gets ready to count the votes Saturday. There are over a dozen candidates contesting from both Jammu-Poonch and Udhampur-Kathua constituencies but in both the cases the contest is primarily between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). National Conference (NC), the major constituent of the ruling coalition in the state did not field candidates for these two seats in Jammu while the Congress has no nominees for the three seats in the Valley. On the eve of the counting day almost all the contesting candidates of different political parties in Jammu exuded great degree of confidence and projected themselves as clear winners in the poll arena leaving behind their rivals far behind. To begin with sitting congress MP from Jammu Madan Lal Sharma who is locked in close fight with BJP candidate Leela Karan Sharma came across as a relaxed leader who was not anxious enough to go in to the nitty gritties of the counting. "All i know is that i am going to win the Jammu-Poonch seat with a huge margin as people across 20 Assembly constituencies have voted in favour of the congress party to elect Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh for the second consecutive term." Sharma said during last five years he worked tirelessly to bring developmental projects and little change in the lives of people and have full faith in the court of people that they would not throw him out of their hearts and acknowledge his hardwork by voting him for the second term. On the other hand the BJP candidate Leela Karan Sharma said he is waiting to hear the final results after a long fight for the cause of people of Jammu. He said for last sixty years Jammu was fighting for its political empowerment but Kashmiri leaders always denied them their due share. He said post Amarnath land agitation the political mindset of the people of Jammu have undergone a sea change and they know which party to vote for. he said he is convinced people of Jammu will send him to Parliament to represent their voice. Interestingly PDP leaders also expressed hope that their Lok Sabha candidate have improved his standing and is giving tough competition to nearest rivals. Panthers party candidate from Udhampur Prof Bhim Singh' s supporters have gone to the extent of predicting his clear victory ont he basis of predictions. Meanwhile BJP candidate Prof Nirmal Singh and congress candidate from Udhampur Lal Singh were equally confident of their victory and were eagerly awaiting to hear final poll results. People of remote Doda and Kishtwar districts have totally rejected congress candidate because he never showed them their face, Prof Nirmal Singh said training guns on his rival candidate Lal Singh. Meanwhile Lal Singh despite facing all odds put up a brave face and expressed hope that he would emerge victorious on Saturday. Over 1,000 government officials have been deployed for counting of votes in two Parliamentary constituencies in Jammu region tomorrow amid elaborate security arrangement, official spokesman today said. Twenty-one contestants from Jammu and 12 from Udhampur Parliamentary constituencies contested for election in the first phase on April 16 and second phase on April 23 respectively, he added. As many as 600 personnel have been deployed for the counting process for Jammu Lok Sabha seat, which is the largest Parliamentary constituency in Jammu and Kashmir, the spokesman said. The counting would take place in the two adjacent complexes of MAM College and Government Polytechnic College, Jammu. Likewise, more than 400 counting staff would be deployed in the 17 counting halls set-up in Government Degree College, Kathua. Meanwhile, stage is also set for counting of votes for the Bhadarwah Assembly segment where by-poll was held on April 23 along with Lok Sabha polls in Udhampur PC. Bhaderwah Assembly seat had fallen vacant due to resignation by Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad on getting elected to the Rajya Sabha. Eight contestants had contested in the Bhadarwah Assembly by-polls.
