5/15/2009 11:28:33 PM
Early Times report
Srinagar, May 15: At least nine persons were injured as police fired teargas shells and used batons to disperse stone-pelting mobs demanding release of prisoners.
The clashes broke out shortly after Friday prayers at Kawdara and Rajouri Kadal near the historic Jamia Masjid in downtown Srinagar when Police stopped youth from taking out rallies in support of the demand for release of prisoners, the sources said.
Chairman of hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani has called for peaceful protests to highlight the plight of prisoners languishing in various jails in and outside the state and demand their release.
Chanting pro-freedom slogans, the youth turned violent and resorted to stone-pelting on the police and paramilitary forces who retaliated with baton-charge and teargas shelling, the sources said.
They said nine persons were injured in the pitched battles which were still continuing when last reports were received.
A group of people also staged a peaceful demonstration in support of the release of prisoners at Abi Guzar in the heart of the city after Friday prayers.
However, the protestors who had assembled under the banner of Democratic Political movement - a constituent of hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference - dispersed peacefully, the sources said.
The sources said peaceful demonstrations were also staged by people in other districts including Baramulla, Sopore, Anantnag, Bandipora and Shopian.
A group of lawyers also staged a peaceful demonstration inside the lower court in support of the demand for release of prisoners this afternoon, the sources said.
The lawyers affiliated with High Court Bar Association assembled in the compound of the court here and raised slogans in support of the demand for the release of prisoners, they said.
