| Return of Niaz in Bhaderwah | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 16: Despite all the odds –emanating from party and family –pitted against him, the former Minister and Congress leader Mohammad Sharief Niaz has won back in Bhaderwah constituency where he was locked in a triangular contest with the BJP and the Peoples Democratic Party. Mohammad Sharief Niaz defeated his nearest rival Daleep Singh of BJP by a margin of 2,747 votes. According to returning officer, Bhaderwah assembly constituency, M M Gupta Mohammad Sharief Niaz polled 21,966 votes as against Singh who got only 19,219 votes. The assembly segment shot into news after the former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad vacated the seat following his election to the Rajya Sabha. It was Azad’s brother Ghulam Ali Azad who decided to support the rival BJP candidate in the elections as an Independent member after being denied ticket from the congress party. Congress gave mandate to its old war horse Mohammad Sharief Niyaz. The bye-elections to Bhaderwah assembly constituency were held along with Udhampur-Doda parliamentary constituency on April 23. During the previous encounter in November 2008 Azad had defeated his nearest rival D K Kotwal of BJP by a margin of 29,436 votes. The constituency was earlier represented by Niaz in 2002. However, he resigned and bye-polls were held on April 24, 2006 in which Azad got elected.
