| Farooq may be a Union Minister | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu, May 16: The resurgence of Congress across the country and near total sweep of the coalition in Jammu and Kashmir may fulfill the old dream of National Conference patriarch Farooq Abdullah –a role in New Delhi. In the recent past Farooq had vied at least twice to get a role at the national scene –either a Minister in the Central Government or a high office of the President or the Vice President of India. When National Conference was an ally of the BJP led National Democratic Alliance at the Center, there was a round of backroom politics suggesting the young Omar (who was then a Union Minister of State) taking over as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and Farooq going to Center as a Minister. This though didn’t meterialise but the National Conference leader later said that he never toyed with any idea. Farooq has made at least two clear attempts for the post of the Vice President of India but numbers and other political formulations never favoured him. Now since the NC’s alliance partner Congress has bounced back to power at the Center and the National Conference has done remarkably well in Kashmir, Dr Abdullah, who won Srinagar-Badgam Lok Sabha seat, may look towards a role in the UPA government. As he won the Lok Sabha election today, Farooq said that he would be "happy" to take up any role in the UPA government. "I will be happy to play whatever role the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government wants me to play," Abdullah said while interacting with a news channel. "I am glad that the UPA has done very well. Whatever role they want me to play I will play... I will not shy away from anything," he said. On the election results he said, "All the exit poll results have been proved wrong and it has been proved that the people want a secular government." "The people have finally come out of their old shells and have proved that they want a future as bright as it can be," he added.
