AMRITSAR, Nov 23: At a historic moment when the world commemorates the 350th year of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji's supreme martyrdom, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, has taken a deeply meaningful step by dedicating its 56th Foundation Day to the Ninth Guru's timeless message of courage, sacrifice, and universal human dignity. This visionary decision, inspired by the profound insight and leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof Karamjeet Singh, carries a profound moral resonance at a time when global societies face divisions, rising intolerance, and fear-driven narratives. By invoking the Guru's eternal teaching-"Fear not, and do not cause fear to anyone"-GNDU affirms that the voice of truth cannot be silenced. A Beacon of Hope for Punjab's Youth Punjab's youth today stand at a difficult crossroads marked by the challenges of unemployment, substance abuse, and a desperate urge to migrate abroad. In this climate, GNDU has chosen to embody Guru Sahib's ideal of fearlessness through strong academic initiatives and future-oriented programmes. Placement packages up to Rs 13 lakh, strengthened programmes in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science and Cyber Security, and expanded opportunities for students from border and rural regions reflect the University's mission to restore hope and create a culture of confidence and opportunity. These developments represent a purposeful intervention to rebuild the future of Punjab's young generation. Academic Excellence Under Visionary Leadership Under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Karamjeet Singh, the University has achieved remarkable academic progress. GNDU today ranks 11th among government universities in India and has attained an impressive H-index of 173. A significant rise in Scopus-indexed research publications further underscores the University's commitment to quality scholarship. These milestones signify not only academic excellence but the continuity of Guru Nanak's message of integrity, hard work, and enlightened service. Taking Punjab's Heritage Global One of the University's most groundbreaking achievements is the proposed establishment of its offshore campus in California-a rare initiative taken by a public university in India. The creation of a three-crore-rupee endowed Chair in Sikh Studies further strengthens GNDU's global academic footprint. These initiatives will reconnect the Punjabi diaspora with their spiritual and cultural heritage, especially at a time when younger generations are drifting away from their roots. By taking academic excellence and Sikh ethos abroad, GNDU is building bridges of identity, heritage, and global engagement. Guru Nanak Dev University has decided to provide certain concessions to students from flood-affected villages. In addition, the university has adopted a village in the Ajnala Vidhan Sabha constituency and deployed its team to extend all possible assistance for the village's development and other related works. Flood Relief and Policy Document for Punjab's Water Crisis Along with this, the university is organizing a seminar to prepare a comprehensive document that will be sent to the Punjab Government, the Central Government, and the United Nations Organization (UNO). This document will include detailed suggestions and strategies to control future floods in Punjab and to improve the deteriorating water situation. A Thought-Provoking Academic and Cultural Celebration The 56th Foundation Day celebrations on 24 November will feature reflections by Dr Brijpal Singh (Former faculty at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie), Dr Kehar Singh (renowned Punjabi literary scholar), and Eng. Supritpal Singh (Indonesia). Their insights will address the relevance of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji's teachings in the modern world, the challenges facing higher education, and the expanding global role of Punjabis. Additionally, the event will be enriched with Gurbani Kirtan, an art exhibition, and folk performances, offering the younger generation an immersive experience of Punjab's spiritual and cultural heritage. A Global Initiative: Proposal to the United Nations In one of its most visionary international initiatives, GNDU has written to the Secretary-General of the United Nations proposing that October 24, the UN Foundation Day, be globally observed as "The Day of Universal Conscience." This proposal honours the moral legacy of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and aims to promote a global culture rooted in conscience, dignity, human freedom, and mutual respect. By taking this message from Amritsar to New York, GNDU seeks to provide the world with a universal moral compass inspired by the Guru's sacrifice and vision. A Day of Reflection, Resolve, and Renewal The University administration has urged students, faculty members, and researchers to embody Guru Sahib's values in daily life-integrity, courage, humility, compassion, and service. GNDU's 56th Foundation Day thus becomes far more than an anniversary; it is a renewed commitment to uphold the Ninth Guru's message of fearlessness, human dignity, and Sarbat da Bhala in every sphere of education and global engagement. |
