| New experimental play ‘Sultaan’ staged at Natrang’s Sunday Theatre | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, May 17- Hindi adaptation of a famous Marathi play ‘Sultaan’ written by Mahesh Elkunchwar and directed by Balwant Thakur was presented here today at Natrang Studio Theatre in the weekly series ‘Sunday Theatre’. Currently Natrang is organizing series of programs to mark the celebrations of ‘26 glorious years of excellence by Natrang in theatre’. ‘Sultaan’ an expressionist play written in an experimental form showcases the complexities of a man who in the lust of power and money has lost his peace of mind. Raaj Shekhar- a businessman by profession has unending desire to have wealth and absolute power. But this obsession in return has taken away every thing from him minus materials. He drives pleasure in abusing the people around him and treats them not more than gin pigs. Being unhappy himself he is not ready to see anyone talking about peace and happiness and will see to it that people around him cry in pain and distress. His mind is all-time engaged in creating situations which bring sufferings for others. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts the mind absolutely. The playwright has beautifully portrayed that unlimited obsession for materials and power makes us inhuman and it ought to take away all the finer human qualities and sensibilities. ‘Sultaan’- a lion in a highly symbolic manner has been portrayed as an animal within a man and his lust to rule leads him to death and destruction. By the time he prepares to kill the lion he had already lost his family, friends and best of the life. The challenging role of Raaj Shekhar and the establishment its multiple inner shades can be an uphill task for any seasoned actor but Gaurav Jamwal despite being new to this profession was able to live through this complex character. His three life supporters- a doctor who takes care of his health part, a priest (Swami) who prays for his prosperity and a girl friend (Juilee) who entertains him were brilliantly played by Vijay Kaul, Hemant Bholla and Tajasvi Sharma respectively. The lights and the sound played an independent role in strengthening the total effect of the play. The lights of the play were designed and executed by Mohit Sharma. The sound effects were creatively arranged and timely played by Rahul Singh. Rohit Verma eracted the sets and Anita Dhar did the presentations. Both the actors and the creative team successfully handled this difficult production and deserve compliments and kudos for creating an intense theatrical experience. |
