For Farooq, are Panchayat elections the next test?
5/17/2009 11:43:26 PM
CHAMAN KAUL
JAMMU: With the starting of election siren on November 17, 2008 for Assembly polls, large number of contestants from various political parties as well as independent candidates participated actively, some won and some lost. Among these all contesting candidates the legendary Farooq Abdullah former Chief Minister and Patron National Conference contested at two constituencies namely Hazratbal and Sonawar and won both the seats to keep the tally intact achieved in previous Assembly polls. Followed by Raja Sabha elections, Abdullah again made it by winning it with political matrix settled to its coalition partner Pradesh Congress Committee. It was not over here as Lok Sabha elections was heading on and were to held across the country. Farooq Abdullah jumped the fray once again from stronghold segment of National Conference, Srinagar and won by thumping majority on the 16th May, thus elections reached to conclusion for few months as Panchayat elections are scheduled to held just couple of months in future and Abdullah should have wait if interested in contesting the same. It is first time in the life history Farooq Abdullah that he contested all elections held in last six moths and won the all in a stretch.

It is good gesture and Abdullah has proved his all rounder stamina by not letting a single opportunity to prove his self. But on the other hand impact of such exercises indicates that National Conference is not a multi faced and multi dimensional but merely a one man show. Despite the fact party fold is constituted of senior loyalists and capable politicians still Abdullah bided to contest for all election held in last six months. Setting an example for the youngsters who joined politics or who are anxious to join in.

As political stalwarts have predicted that law and order will the question mark after the elections, for which Mufti Mohmmad Syeed and Syed Ali Geelani have already spited venom regarding Amarnath pilgrimage by advocating cut short time period of pilgrimage from two months two one and a half month respectively. Not only has this, but Bhartiya Janata Party playing its part had challenged both and asked them as who the authorities are they (Mufti, Geelani) to fix the duration of pilgrimage. Besides Geelani has announced that strikes will be observed from 12th June across the Valley, which certainly should cause of concern for the government. It is the time only which will decide that in which way the wind blows, till then lets wait and watch.
