| Results augurs well for coalition | | | NIRBHAY JAMMUAL Jammu, May 17: Even though the voters mandate in the Lok Sabha election did not favour one party, the Congress led UPA Government, which is back in power, is expected to provide a stable and strong Government in the country.
It will be stronger than what it was between 2004 and 2009.The reason for that was the role of the leftists. The leftists tried to raise objections to series of decisions the Congress led Government would take. It was ultimately the nuclear deal with the USA that ruptured the alliance with the leftists. The leftists had thought that by opposing the nuclear deal they would be able to improve their 2004 performance. Their calculations proved wrong. The BJP too suffered a setback because of three factors. First some of its leaders did not support L.K. Advani when the party projected him as the Prime Ministerial candidate. Several voices were heard supporting Narender Modi as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the BJP.This had its adverse impact on the mindset of the voters. Secondly the Varun Gandhi episode seems to have angered a sizeable number of voters in UP,Bihar and other northern states. Thirdly, the BJP had none in the organisation who could prove an icon for the youth whereas the Congress had such icons for the youth in Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka.
With the UPA Government in the centre there are possibilities of stability and strength in the NC-Congress coalition Government in Jammu and Kashmir. Political analysts are of the opinion that had the BJP led NDA been voted to power in the centre it would have resulted in the strained relations between the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir Government. This is so because with BJP in the centre and Congress in power in Jammu and Kashmir one cannot expect a smooth relationship between the state and Delhi.Since the National Conference President, Dr Farooq Abdullah, had, during the pre-poll campaign, blamed L.K.Advani for having forced him (Farooq) to release three militants in exchange of release of Indian Airlines passengers who were hijacked to Kandhar the BJP led Government would have not liked to accept the NC-Congress Government in Jammu and Kashmir. It could have starved the state with reduced funds and could have created other economic and security problems.
Any Government in Jammu and Kashmir may face survival risk if it embarks on a collision course. This lesson Farooq Abdullah had learnt after the 1983 election when he had adopted anti-centre postures. This attitude led to the fall of his Government by defections engineered by the central Congress. It was out of that realisation that he hammered out an alliance with the Congress when Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister in 1986.It was this very realisation that had prompted Farooq to be in the lap of the BJP led NDA Government in the centre. To be by the right side of the central Government he had not opposed when Atal Behari Vajpayee wanted to induct Omar Abdullah in the council of ministers headed by Vajpayee. As such victory of the Congress may prove beneficial for the ruling coalition in Jammu and Kashmir. One can expect better guidance, more funds and better development plans for this border state. Even then it all depends on the Congress and the National Conference to deliver the goods. If the ruling coalition performs well it can fully utilise the central funds for the benefit of people of the state.
