| Polythene banned in Srinagar | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, May 19: Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has finally announced ban on import and use of polythene within the SMC limits with immediate effect from today. The ban from today came less than a week after Valley Citizen Council (VCC) General Secretary Imdad Saqi filed a Public Interest litigation (PIL) in the Jammu and Kashmir High court seeking its intervention for banning the import and use of polythene in the entire valley. SMC Commissioner Khawaja Farooq Ahmad Renzu has issued instructions to all concerned officers including Health Wing of the Corporation to ensure implementation of banning of polythene carry bags within the Srinagar municipal limits. Meantime the citizens of Srinagar, commercial establishments, groups, associations, institutions and those visiting Srinagar municipal limits too have been advised not to carry or distribute polythene bags. Mr Renzu has directed the implementing authorities to impose fines and seize the material, including the equipment used for carrying the polythene bags. The ban shall be enforced in the entire Srinagar district and parts of Budgam, Ganderbal and Pulwama districts which come within the Srinagar municipal limits. Jammu and Kashmir Pollution Control Board (JKPCB) has appealed to people to stop use of non-biodegradable material so as to save the environment. The Regional Director of JKPCB said here today that non- biodegradable material (management, handling and disposal) Rule 2009 have come into force vide SRO-122 issued no May 11. Seeking cooperation from common people, he said it is time to switch over to eco-friendly biodegradable alternatives.
