| JU Law School, DLSA convene awareness session on Human Rights Day | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 10: The Law School, University of Jammu, in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Jammu, organized an awareness programme to commemorate International Human Rights Day 2025. The symposium, focused on the United Nations theme "Our Everyday Essentials," served as a vital platform to translate abstract legal principles into the tangible realities of daily life, emphasizing rights to sustenance, shelter, healthcare, and a clean environment as fundamental pillars of human dignity. The programme featured a keynote address by Prof. K.L. Bhatia, Founder Director of The Law School, who served as the Chief Guest. Prof. Bhatia elucidated the Indic vision of human rights, drawing from his extensive writings and research to frame a jurisprudence centered on the expectations of the common citizen. He emphasized the critical role of budding lawyers as instruments of social engineering, tasked with transforming legal frameworks to meaningfully realize "our everyday essentials" for all. His address was followed by a Book Donation Ceremony, during which he contributed a collection of his significant works to the institution's library. The Guests of Honour reinforced the judiciary's role in upholding essential rights. Shri Sunil Kumar, Sub-Judge/Secretary of the High Court Legal Services Committee, highlighted systemic efforts toward legal accessibility. Ms. Maleeka Sharma, Sub-Judge/Secretary of DLSA Jammu, detailed pivotal legislation and welfare schemes operated under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), designed for the protection and upliftment of vulnerable and marginalized communities. The session commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Monica Narang, Associate Professor, The Law School, and a poignant documentary screening on human rights challenges. Esteemed advocates Ms. Deepali Arora and Ms. Uma Kapahi, serving as Resource Persons, delivered insightful addresses that bridged theoretical law with practical advocacy. A central highlight was the Interactive Session, adeptly facilitated by Dr. Shubha Vats and Dr. Vandita Sharma, which sparked a vibrant dialogue with students on actionable strategies and the practical role of advocacy in securing everyday rights. The proceedings were conducted by Dr. Upasana Sharma, Assistant Professor, The Law School, and concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Nitan Sharma, also an Assistant Professor at the institution. The session was also graced by the presence of faculty members including Dr. Palvi Mathavan Puri, Dr. Ramesh Kumar, Dr. Sudesh Tripathi, Dr. Kartika Bakshi, as well as Para-Legal Volunteers Sahil Khosla and Ravinder. |
