| Exclusive women's bank in Srinagar | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, May 19- To enterprise the women from the valley, Jammu and Kashmir has ventured into opening of a bank, exclusively for women. Named Kashmir Women's Cooperative Bank, this unique financial institution will function from Srinagar and provide basic banking facilities including timely loans to the women who are financially unstable. The founding members of this bank were motivated to open their own venture because most banks in the valley would turn down applications for loans from women. No wonder, the opening of Kashmir Women's Cooperative Bank has come as a pillar of support for the empowerment of womenfolk in the valley. "Firstly it's an exclusive bank for women. Secondly, we have opened this bank to help women belonging to weaker sections and who are working or want to start their own business. Since their requirement is less, we have started providing loans starting from rupees 20, 000,” said Ashiya Saleem, Manager, Kashmir Women's Cooperative Bank, Srinagar. Women in this insurgency-hit region can deposit their hard earned money in the bank and even apply for loans. Apart from enabling several women to become self-employed, the bank also counsels the account holders in managing their earnings and other assets. So much so, that a simple process of opening a savings account has come as a blessing for the women.
