| Slathia says village committees to monitor PDS soon | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, May 19- Stressing the need for streamlining Public Distribution System in the state, the Minister for Industries and Consumer Affairs Surjit Singh Slathia today at an officers’ meeting said that as a large chunk of population is dependent on PDS ration, its distribution needs to be monitored well at the grass roots level. For this, village level committees will be constituted to have a constant vigil on the PDS in rural areas. These committees will send a timely feedback regarding the distribution system, he added. Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Pawan Kotwal, DDC Jammu, Dr. Mandeep K. Bhandari, Director CA & PD, Chief Engineers of PWD, PDD, Irrigation, FC and PHE, Vice chairman JDA, Commissioner JMC and other sectoral officers attended the meeting. With a view to review the drinking water scenario in Jammu division, Slathia minutely discussed schemes under three major sectors PHE, PDD and Irrigation and Flood Control and exhorted the engineers to work with proper coordination to meet the drinking water requirement of the city as well as the rural areas. He issued on the spot instructions to provide tanker services to the needy people and Kandi areas need focused attention of the hydraulic engineers. He asked them to prepare a proposal for replacing the old machinery with the new one and also include provisions for the standby machinery. He asked the Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control to work out the quantum of additional area to be brought under irrigation with the commissioning of new Tawi pumping station and inform the farmers to prepare themselves in advance to sow the Khrief crops. He also asked the Chief Engineer PDD to maintain the street lights right from Flyover to Airport, funds for which will be provided by PWD. Slathia also asked the Chief Engineer PDD to provide power connectivity to the new industrial units at the earliest, the amount for which stands released by SIDCO.
