| J&K Wushu Athletes Shine at Wushu Federation Cup, Clinch 39 Medals | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 5: Wushu athletes from the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir delivered an outstanding performance at the Wushu Federation Cup, held at Chhattisgarh from 24th to 30th December, by securing a total of 39 medals, including 9 Gold, 12 Silver, and 18 Bronze medals. The contingent comprising Sub-Junior, Junior, and Senior athletes showcased remarkable skill and determination, bringing laurels to the UT of J&K. The team arrived in Jammu yesterday, where they were accorded a rousing reception by the Dronacharya Awardee Kuldeep Handoo, along with officials and members of the Wushu fraternity. While congratulating the medalists across all age categories, Kuldeep Handoo lauded their dedication and consistent hard work. He stated that Wushu is steadily flourishing in the UT of J&K and emphasized the need for greater government support and focused attention to make the sport more medal-oriented at national and international levels. He also congratulated the coaches of Khelo India Centres (KICs) at Jammu, Shopian, Rajouri, Budgam and Handwara for their exceptional contribution towards the athletes' success. Handoo expressed gratitude to the J&K Sports Council for establishing KIC Wushu centres in far-flung areas, which has significantly strengthened grassroots development. I am pleased to submit that Wushu has now emerged as one of the most popular sports across the entire UT of J&K. Earlier, the discipline was largely confined to Jammu and Srinagar districts; however, due to the focused promotion of Wushu at the grassroots level and the establishment of Khelo India Centres (KICs) in far-flung and remote areas, a large pool of new and promising Wushu players has come into the limelight. Notably, many of these athletes have secured medals at National and International Championships, bringing laurels to the UT In view of the forthcoming major events like World championships. Asian Games, Commonwealth championships, he informed that he would request secretary, J&K Sports Council, for organizing a one-month centralized coaching camp in Jammu for all KIC Wushu centres. The proposed camp would aim at imparting modern training methodologies, advanced techniques, and updated rules to both players and coaches. On the occasion, the President of Wushu Association of J&K, Vijay Saraf, along with Vice President Ranjeet Kalra, General Secretary Bhavneet, and Treasurer Sohit Sharma, congratulated the medalists for their exemplary performance and for making the UT of J&K proud by earning national accolades. |
