NC may not play big brother
5/21/2009 11:49:29 PM

The equation between the Congress and the National Conference is quite smooth right from the day the two decided to share power in Jammu and Kashmir. Such a good relations has never materialised between the two, known for their love and hate relations. The two have coexisted in the past. The two have acted as sworn political foes. After the Assembly elections the two joined hands to rule the state for another six years. Well had not the PDP leadership faulted while kicking up Amarnath land row the Congress would have preferred to maintain the alliance with the PDP. The Congress had to bear the brunt of public anger because it was sharing power with the PDP when the land row surfaced. The Congress did not dare to join hands with the PDP after it managed to win 17 Assembly seats against 20 in 2002. Omar Abdullah utilised his friendship with Rahul Gandhi and Sachin Pilot for persuading the Congress high command for joining hands with the National Confer ence for forming the Government. After the Government formation the first challenge the two had to face was sharing of Lok Sabha seats. he Congress left all the three seats in the valley for the National Conference to contest. The NC left the two seats in the Jammu region for the Congress to fight on.The National Conference was keen to field its candidate from the Ladakh constituency. The Congress opposed it and ultimately fielded P.Namgyal from the Ladakh constituency. Under the coalition Dharma the NC leaders should have campaigned in favour of the Congress candidate in Ladakh. None of its senior leaders visited Ladakh for pre-poll campaign because a secret understanding had been reached with Ghulam Hassan Khan, who was in the poll fray as an independent candidate. Infact the NC leadership had prompted him to file his nomination papers as an independent candidate. The result of the support from the National Conference was that Khan won the election. The state Congress felt annoyed. The Congress high command had already taken cognizance of the trick the NC played. What triggered fresh anger was when Khan announced having joined the National Conference. He announced it in presence of Omar and Farooq. When Farooq and Omar learnt that the Congress leadership had been angered by the way the NC leadership accepted Khan in the party it motivated Khan to declare that he had not joined the NC.He did it faithfully. Such tricks, if played again, could boomerang on the National Conference. The National Conference s leadership should not come to the conclusion that the Congress has to maintain its relations with the NC for the sake of power. The NC leadership needs to know that there are neither permanent foes or friends in politics. The PDP is there and the Congress is at liberty to revive its alliance and that too when the Congress has emerged as the strongest political force after the Lok Sabha poll.
