| Coalition wants to chug rail to Kashmir | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 22- The Jammu and Kashmir Government will approach the centre for expediting work on extending the train services up to Qazigund. Official sources said that though the work has been started on the project, the progress continues to be slow when compared to the completion of the train services between Anantnag and Baramulla. Sources said that Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, will shortly meet Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh and the Railways Minister with the request that the work on completion and commissioning of the Jammu-Qazigund rail link be expedited. The Chief Minister will also try to persuade the union Railways Minister to extend the railway services from Baramulla to Kupwara. The state authorities have already informed the centre and the Railway ministry about the positive response from people to the introduction of railway services between Baramulla and Anantnag. It has also informed the railway ministry about the swelling profit the services in Kashmir are earning. The state Government believes that once Jammu-Baramulla rail link was completed it could boost tourist traffic to Kashmir. Tourism Department authorities said that holidayers intending to visit Kashmir think twice because they feel that traveling by train up to Jammu and then by road from Jammu to Srinagar was time consuming and cumbersome. They said that a survey has revealed that tourist would prefer rail journey from Mumbai to Srinagar or from Delhi to Srinagar. It is in this connection that the state Government wants Anantnag-Qazigund rail services to be commissioned during the current year and between Jammu and Qazigund by the end of next year.
