WWF Organises World Migratory Bird Day at Leh

On the eve of World Migratory Bird Day 2009, WWF-India, field office Leh in collaboration with the Department of Wildlife Protection, Government of J&K organized a drawing and painting competition and a students’ symposium at Leh. These events were attended by a large number of students from different educational institutions of Ladakh. In the drawing and painting competition about 120 students made paintings of different migratory birds and their habitats. On the same occasion a students’ symposium on the theme “Migratory Birds and Threats to Migration” was also organized at Lamdon Model Senior Secondary School, Leh. 25 Students from different educational institutions of Ladakh participated in the symposium. The symposium was inaugurated by Sh. Jigmet Takpa (IFS), Conservator, Forest and Wildlife, a renowned conservationist from the Ladakh region. Sh. Abdul Rauf, Chief Education Officer, Leh extended his patronage to the event by Presiding over the Function.

Ms. Urgain Chosdon of SOS TCV Choglamsar bagged the1st position in the symposium. 2nd and 3rd Prizes went to Ms. Chamba Lamo of Govt. High School, Thiksay and Ms. Kaneez Fatima of Imamia Model School, Leh respectively. The drawing and painting competition was held in two categories. In the senior category, Mr. Tsering Mutup of Mahabodhi Residential School bagged first position and in the Junior Category, first prize went to Ms. Rigzen Angmo of Lamdon Model School, Leh.

Speaking on the occasion Sh. Jigmet Takpa, appreciated the efforts of WWF in spreading the message of bird conservation among the common masses. He highlighted the importance of migratory birds and added that Ladakh is a unique place where during every summer a huge number of migratory birds visit and these birds use the wetlands of Ladakh as their breeding grounds. He called upon every one to work for the conservation of these unique creatures which are Ambassadors of Biodiversity as well as Peace.
In his address Sh. Adbul Rauf, Chief Education Officer, Leh, said that by organising such kind of programmes we can make the students aware of the migratory birds and conservation of their habitats.
On this occasion Ms. Nisa Khatoon, Project Officer, WWF informed that World Migratory Bird Day is a global awareness campaign which highlights the urgent need to protect the migratory birds and their habitats. She further informed that these activities are organized across the globe and United Nations links them through a single global campaign and theme. Latter Chief Guest & Guest of honour gave away prizes to all the prize winning students. The programme concluded with vote of thanks from the WWF project officer and programme coordinator Mr. Phuntsog Tashi.

Crisis manager Azad makes comeback to Union Cabinet
New Delhi, May 22 : Known for his crisis managerial skills, Ghulam Nabi Azad's inclusion in the Union Cabinet marks his comeback to the Central government after a brief gap of three and a half years.

Hailing from Baderwah area of Jammu and Kashmir, the 60-year-old leader has risen from being a block secretary of the Congress in 1973 to being one of the key members of the party whose services are in much demand at all the times.

He returns to the Union ministry after his three-year stint in Jammu and Kashmir as chief minister of a Congress-PDP coalition government.

He has been part of most of the Congress government's ever since he arrived at the central stage in 1980s.

He has held key posts like general secretary for a record nine times and being a member of the Congress Working Committee for 18 years - one of the longest in the present generation of leaders.

Azad's forayed into central politics by becoming the first minority community president of All India Youth Congress at the age of 31 years
