Implementation of Indian Tobacco Act reviewed

UDHAMPUR, MAY 22 - To review the various aspects of Indian Tobacco Act-2003 and implementation of Section-5 of the Act in Udhampur district, the District Development Commissioner (DDC), Udhampur, Mr Ajay Khajuria convened a meeting of officers of allied departments, here today.
Principal Govt. College for Women, Prof. Kiran Bakshi, Chief Planning Officer, Additional SP, Udhampur, Assistant Controller, Drugs, Udhampur, academicians and Food and Drug Inspectors attended the meeting.
To create mass awareness about the provisions of the Act, it was decided in the meeting that a students rally on Anti-Tobacco Day being observed on May 31, would be organized at the district headquarter in collaboration with Chief Education Officer and President, Lions Club, Udhampur. It was further disclosed that the Principal of the Women College and District Information Officer would organize symposia on the topic of ill effects of drugs and smoking in different educational institutions in the district. Besides advertisements highlighting various aspects of the section-5 of the Act would be issued to print media from time to time to educate the public.
Regarding check display of sign board “ No Smoking Area” in government establishments in the district, the DDC constituted a committee comprising of Principal GCW, Udhampur, Assistant Controller Drugs, Udhampur and District Information Officer, Udhampur to make frequent visits to government institutions to check the implementation of the Act spots. The printed posters of “not to smoke at public places” were being distributed to other establishments using public areas as defined in the Act with the request to display them at prominent places.
The meeting decided that a separate meeting of Hoteliers and owners of Banquet halls of the district would be convened shortly to apprise them about the provisions of the Act and creation of separate smoking zones in their respective establishments.
