The sorry status of the girl child in India could be noticed in sex-ratio in the age groiup of 0-6 years, which has registered a sharp decline over the last decade - from 945 females per 1,000 males in the 1991 Census to 927:1,000 in 2001 and it is sliding down with each passing year, said Dr. Sabu M. George,
Expressing concerns over the data regarding projected not only in the Indian but also in the Jammu and Kashmir, he asserted that J&K shares in this record is a slide to <900 girls to per 1000of males.’
“I see the child sex ratio in J&K may go worsening in the years to come and worst as compared to Punjab and Haryana if the remedial measures are not taken in time,” Dr George renowned gender activist said while addressing a workshop on PNDT Act and awareness among people’ organized at Govt Medical College Jammu here today.
He said in Jammu Division areas viz Jammu Kathua, Rajouri Suderbani Hiranagar all record this ratios below 900, with Sunderbani recording just 755 girls only against per thousand of boy child. Statistics also indicate that 235 girls go missing every missing per month in Jammu division, he said. “and it is all due to technological advances that ironically have aided the disappearance of the girl child, he said.
He further pin pointed that recently cashing in on son-preference; a value that is entrenched in Indian society, a new sex-selection procedure has entered the market and series of advertisements in for a gender selection saying "Gender Selection is now a reality. Dr Sabu in the end sought the help of media, professionals and the peer educators to generate mass opinion against gender selection. Highlighting the problem of female foeticide which has assumed a dangerous trend with disastrous consequences for the future generations. The ratio has gone down upto 945 girls for 1000 boys in various northern states in the age group of 0-6 years. A situation of imbalance of the two sexes has arisen now and its fall out will be seen in the next decade. There will be a rise in the crime rate. Psycho social problems will be on the rise stated Dr Jatinder Singh an eminent diabetologist.
So the quantum of the problem can be imagined. The future generation will not forgive this generation for not under taking proper remedial measures. The female infoeticide is prevalent in the middle class section of the society and rare in affluent and poor sections of the society. Every individual needs to contribute at his own level and try to root out this crime. Parents should be educated so that they are not biased towards male sex.
