| Rather meets Academicians, Transporters & Industrialists | | 2nd day of pre-budget consultations | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, May 23: The Minister for Finance, Planning and Parliamentary Affairs Abdul Rahim Rather on Saturday said that government was open to the practicable suggestions coming from various quarters that would help in improving economic affairs of the state. Addressing separate meetings with Academicians, Transporter Associations and representatives of Federation of Indian Industry in continuation with pre-budget consultations convened to seek suggestions from persons representing different strata of society, Minister said he was in favour of more and more people accentuating on the issues concerning the overall welfare of the state and its economic growth. “I think not only suggestions but even pointing out loopholes in the government functioning would be beneficial in the larger interest”, the Minister asserted. Thought provoking discussions on prevailing economic indicators and prospective planning to ensure sustained development dominated interactions with known academicians from Jammu University which included Prof R L Bhatt (Economics), Prof Veshaw Sharma (Business Management), Prof Santosh Gupta (Commerce) and Prof Ashok Irayan (Business Management). The academicians threw light on various aspects affecting public life, economy, public services and socio-economic development. Supporting their argument with studies and survey reports, the academicians suggested the need for keeping up with prospective planning and suggested that the budget outlay should cover at least next six years with each coming year’s budget to act as increment to the original plan outlay. The academicians also highlighted the problems confronting the state, including the ever prevailing unemployment and suggested revision of education policy for making it vocational oriented. The academicians also stressed for promoting productive employment by motivating the youth for adopting self employment so that they should not hanker after government jobs. They also called for exploring potential areas in each region. Promotion of Tourism, horticulture, floriculture, besides industries like food processing and software industry should be on priority of the government, they stressed. Better Infrastructure including road connectivity, telecommunication and information technology, besides hassle free procedures for establishing Industry were also stressed upon by the participants. Later, the Minister held discussions with representatives of Federation of Indian Industry and Transporter Associations, wherein they raised certain issues concerning their field of activities. Economic advisor to Government, Mr Jaleel Ahmed Khan, Commissioner/Secretary Finance, Mr. Sudhanshu Pandey, senior officers from Finance and Sales Tax departments were also present during the consultation meetings.
