When Air Chief,Marshal Fali Homi Major,stated that China posed a bigger threat than Pakistan to India it was not a novel observation.Major could be in trouble because he has made a political statement.Such a statement from senior bureacrats in the past had earned them criticism from their political bosses.Well Falli Homi is not wrong when he talks about bigger threat to India from China than Pakistan.In India such threat perception has been looming large since the 1962 Chinese invasion on India.India received a drubbing in 1962.Though the Hindi-Chini Bhai Bhai era had started becoming weaker from 1960 onwards a mild threat from the then Indian leaders to the Chinese to withdraw from the Aksai Chin and Tibet had irked Beijing to such an extent that it launched a full scale war against its "Bhai".This threat perception is not visible only among the Indians.Even the US leaders t alk of it.Veteran defence analysts refer to it.Richard Fisher,adjunct fellow of Asian Studies at the centre for security policy,has made a detailed observation on chinese threat to India.He has said that India's concern over China's growing military power "is highly justified."He is one among defence experts who talks about the Chinese military aid to Pakistan and its help to Islamabad in having ballistic missiles.These missiles have been exported by China to Pakistan.This way China holds a multidirectional threat to India.Its military aid to Pakistan,a bitter foe of Delhi,is being viewed as one major component of China's threat to India.Secondly,Chinese aid and technical assistance to Moists in Nepal,Naxals in north east region is considered another component of Chinese threat to India. Falli Homi Major has stated that "we do not know much about the actual capabalities of China,their combat edge or how professional their military is.They are certainly a greater threat."As a result of this threat perception India has started upgrading its fighter bases and strengthening five air bases in the northeast which can operate Su-30 MKI fighters.This may not be enough when China operates more than 3500 aircrafts.It is inducting Sukhoi-30s,JF-17 Thunder Light combat aircraft,J-10 strike fighters and other airborne warning aircrafts.The Indian air strike prepardness was exposed last year when the Air Force authorities stated that 30 per cent of the aircrfat and fighter fleet has become outdated.This woke up the Ministry of Defence that started a search for latest warplanes in the west and in Russia.China is a threat to India but it will be better if the Chinese are not annoyed by describing them as bigger enemy to India than Pakistan.(eom)
