| Govt to augment water supply in Srinagar-Jammu on priority basis | | | early Times Report Jammu, May 25 Govt has decided to utilize the assistance available under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) to improve the living conditions of the people, especially in the two capital states by developing urban infrastructure. The Sources said that Govt is contemplating for providing proper sewage, drainage systems and safe and sufficient drinking water, solid waste management, urban transport, slum development and rehabilitation of families shifted away from water channels or on account of road widening in the two capital cities. The Government is aware of the problems in the two capital cities because of population explosion,the result of migration from rural areas to the urban belts.A snap sur vey has revealed that the Jammu city has now over 12 lakh population against seven lakhs in 1990 and similar is the situation in summer capital- Srinagar city. And the situation now has called for speedy implementation of the plans formulated for development and management of urban transport and housing for the houseless. Focus has been given on the improvement of drinking water supply and during the last two years 12.25 million gallons a day of drinking water has been added to Rangil and Doodhganga water supply schemes at a cost of Rs.70.18 crores in Srinagar and Jammu cities. Work is on for adding 14 million gallons a day at Sittlee filtration plant at a cost of Rs.35.26 crores.Number of schemes for improving water supply schemes have been submitted to the Union Ministry of Urban Development
