BJP lawmakers stage walkout, protest CM Omar's remarks in J&K Assembly
2/11/2026 11:07:38 PM
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Feb 11: BJP legislators on Wednesday staged a walkout from the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, protesting against what they described as "unparliamentary and indecent language" used by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during House proceedings.
Leader of the Opposition Sunil Sharma alleged that Abdullah's remarks, including phrases like "joote maaro" (hit with shoes), violated parliamentary decorum and brought disrepute to democratic traditions.
BJP members raised slogans against the National Conference-led government, demanding an unconditional apology from the Chief Minister.
Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly, Sharma had said, "Until Omar Abdullah withdraws his words and apologises unconditionally, our MLAs will not allow the Assembly to function. Such language insults the institution and undermines its dignity."
He described the Chief Minister's comments as "shameful" and said they reflected a disregard for the House's sanctity and constitutional norms.
Sharma also accused ruling party members of mocking the Opposition using gestures, which he said further lowered the level of debate in the House.
The controversy erupted during a heated discussion, after which BJP MLAs walked out chanting slogans against the NC government. The Speaker later adjourned the Assembly for the day amid the tense situation.
The BJP warned that its protest would continue if the Chief Minister failed to apologise, asserting that no compromise could be made on the dignity of the Assembly.
