| Mounting casualties a moral challenge for government: PDP | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, May27 Peoples Democratic Party has expressed deep concern at the mounting number of casualties in police actions in Srinagar. Party spokesperson in a statement issued today a said the unabated loss of life in the city should be halted before the situation gets out of control. Conveying condolences to the bereaved family of Arif Ahmed Bhat who succumbed to his injuries sustained in recent police action the spokesman said the long list of casualties in the state especially in the capital city presented a major moral challenge to the administration. The death comes close on the heels of the cold blooded murder of another young man Manzoor Ahmed Beg at the hands of some police personnel. PDP spokesperson added the government must understand the pain and misery unwarranted loss of life causes to their families and adopt more humane methods of crowd control. The police action most of the times proves disproportionate to the situation and sparks off a vicious circle of violence. “Government must put its act together and rein in police and security forces”, the spokesman added. The spokesman said it was ironical that the ruling party which claimed representation of Srinagar city more than other areas was completely out of touch with the population and had no political or social influence to be able to reach out to the alienated common man. This situation he said had dangerous portents for the economic and commercial interests of the valley as Srinagar was the nerve center of the state. On the one hand it further alienated the youth and on another it caused economic distress to the already deprived sections of society. Commenting on the flip flop policy of the government on the issue of the detention of separatist leaders the spokesman said it should stop the cat and mouse play with them. It cant keep them behind bars or put curbs on their activities and still claim that they were free, he said and cautioned against the dual policy of the government.
