| Educational visit to Salal Power Project, Reasi organized by SMVDU | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 20: A group of 30 B.Sc. Biotechnology 4th semester students, accompanied by one PhD scholar and two faculty members from the School of Biotechnology (SoBT), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, undertook an educational visit to the Salal Power Project in Reasi, Jammu and Kashmir. Situated on the Chenab River amidst picturesque mountains, the Salal Power Project offered students a unique opportunity to witness large-scale hydroelectric power generation in a serene natural setting. The project, a 690 MW run-of-the-river hydroelectric facility, plays a significant role in sustainable energy production in northern India. Upon arrival, the students were warmly greeted by the engineering team, who provided an overview of the project and its significance. The visit commenced with a tour of the control room, where students were introduced to the centralized monitoring system used for regulating dam operations. The engineers explained how various components work in coordination to ensure efficient control of water flow and safe functioning of the dam. The interaction was highly engaging, with the engineers patiently addressing queries and encouraging discussion, which sparked keen interest and curiosity among the students. The group then proceeded to the power station, where the engineers demonstrated how the opening and closing of gates and overall power generation are managed through an advanced computerized system. This exposure helped students connect theoretical concepts with real- world applications of hydroelectric power technology. To make the excursion a wholesome and well-rounded experience, lunch was thoughtfully arranged for the participants, providing time for reflection and informal discussion. This was followed by a visit to a nearby gaushala, which added a calm and heartwarming conclusion to the trip. The tranquil surroundings and gentle presence of the cows brought a sense of peace and joy, leaving the students delighted by the warm and welcoming atmosphere. Overall, the visit enriched the students' academic understanding while allowing them to appreciate the natural beauty of Jammu and Kashmir. The students expressed their gratitude for this enriching learning experience, and the faculty members acknowledged the support and cooperation extended by the staff of the Salal Power Project in making the visit a success. In a collaborative effort, Dr. Indu Bhushan, Associate Professor and Professor Ratna Chandra at the School of Biotechnology, successfully organized and managed a visit. This visit was made possible through the coordination of Dr .Anil Kumar, the Head of the School of Biotechnology. The initiative was made possible under the guidance of Professor Pragati Kumar, Vice Chancellor of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, expressed sincere appreciation for the efforts undertaken and encouraged both faculty members and students to actively participate in and frequently visit such establishments to enhance their academic and practical exposure. |
