Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 10: The Consumer Confederation of India (CCI), in collaboration with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), organized a Consumer Awareness Program on 10 March 2026 at the BIS Jammu & Kashmir Branch Office (JKBO), Bari Brahmana, Jammu. The program was held under the "Consumer Awareness Bharat Yatra" series with the objective of spreading awareness among consumers about their rights and the importance of product quality and standards.
Welcoming the participants, Sh. Tilak Raj, Director & Head, BIS JKBO, extended a warm welcome to Dr. Anant Sharma, National Chairman, CCI, along with his team, who arrived in Jammu after covering nearly 17,000 km across various states of India as part of the Bharat Yatra. During his address, Sh. Tilak Raj also highlighted the initiatives and activities undertaken by BIS in Jammu & Kashmir and six districts of Punjab to promote standards and quality awareness among consumers and stakeholders.
The Consumer Awareness Bharat Yatra was flagged off on 24th December 2025, on the occasion of National Consumer Day 2025, from New Delhi by Sh. Pralhad Joshi, Hon'ble Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Govt of India. The Yatra is scheduled to culminate on 15th March 2026 in New Delhi, marking the observance of World Consumer Rights Day 2026.
The program was formally inaugurated by Dr. Anant Sharma, who shared valuable insights on consumer rights and responsibilities, emphasizing the importance of informed decision-making while purchasing products and services.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), consumer awareness groups, academia, industry representatives, NGOs, and general consumers, with more than 50 participants attending the program.
During the interactive session, participants were sensitized about the crucial role of BIS in ensuring that only standardized and safe products reach consumers. The significance of quality certification marks such as the ISI Mark and Hallmark was explained in detail. A live demonstration of the BIS Care App was also conducted to educate consumers on verifying the authenticity of certified products. A short video clip of the Bharat Yatra flag-off ceremony and a recorded message from the Director General, BIS, were also displayed to the audience.
The program concluded with an inspiring message from the Director General of BIS, highlighting the collective responsibility of consumers, regulatory bodies, and organizations in building a quality-conscious and empowered nation.
