| ‘Refer patients to tertiary hospitals only when required’ | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, MAY 29 (INFO)-Maintaining that the health sector was being accorded top priority by the government, Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture, Mr Sham Lal Sharma today sought people’s role in ensuring more transparency and accountability in health institutions across the State by associating themselves with the delivery system, upkeep and maintenance of the health institutions. The Minister said this while inspecting a number of health institutions in Kathua district today. Mr Sharma said that performance and tenure would be the yardsticks for promotion and transfer of the doctors and the para-medical staff. He said that the comprehensive transfer policy would be applied in health services to ensure better medicare and providing equal chances to medicos for serving in rural and urban areas. He said that for providing due and timely medicare to the patients, stationing of doctors in their respective hospitals would be strictly adhered to and, anyone leaving the station would be dealt sternly. Honorarium of contractual doctors serving in rural and far off areas would be enhanced, the Minister said and added that the government was contemplating to upgrade medicare facilities in the health institutions by way of providing required staff, diagnostic facilities besides ambulances. He said that each district hospital would be provided an ambulance fitted with all necessary equipments to meet the critical needs of the patients under referral. The Health Minister asked the doctors to be honest with their profession and not to commercialize this noble profession. He said that despite getting private practice allowances, some doctors resort to private practice, which should be stopped forthwith. He said by attending the patients with due care and devotion, doctors are sure to seek blessing of ailing, adding that unnecessary referral from primary to secondary and tertiary health institutions should be strictly avoided to contain the rush in tertiary hospitals. He issued clear cut instructions to the doctors and para-medical staff that indiscipline and non-punctuality would be taken serious note of and even pre-mature retirements would also be brought into the effect in favour of erring doctors.
