ICELA launch environmental awareness campaign

Samba, May 30: The Indian Council for Enviro-legal Action (ICELA) launched a fortnight environmental awareness campaign in connection with world environment day celebrations. The state convenor ICELA Ashok Sharma inaugurated the campaign with a symposium on “Smoking and Environmental Pollution” held at govt high school, Bari Brahmana, Samba on the occasion of anti-smoking day.
The symposium was presided over by H.S. Salathia head master of the school and former district and session judge Ch. Vidya Sagar was the chief guest, and the programme was organized by Purmandal block president R.R. Bali.
Ten students belonging to govt high school Bari Brahmana, Middle school, R.K. Model School, Girls Middle School Bari Brahmana participated. Sonia Dutt and Shelly of Govt. Middle school was adjudged as first and 2nd whereas Heena of govt high school Bari Brahmana got 3rd position. On the occasion 300 students, teachers and citizens took pledged to fight against the menace of smoking to save human life from deadly diseases. The prizes and certificates were distributed among the winners and participants. Addressing the gathering Sharma said that smoking and use of tobacco is the 2nd killer after water borne diseases and there is need to take corrective measures by making smoking as a cognizable and non bailable offence. He urged upon the people to join the movement against smoking and use of tobacco by becoming ICELA members.
Sharma on the occasion expressed serious concern over the engulfing of forests by the fires in every nook and corner of Jammu region and urged upon the chief minister and the forest minister for their personal intervention to prevent and control such fires. He also expressed concern over the menace of industrial pollution in Bari Brahmana area and requested the state pollution control board and other authorities to take measures to control such pollution.
Prominent among those who addressed and participated in the programme include JD Singh, Dr. Iftqar Hussain, Ramesh Chander Badyal, Yash Paul, Onkar Saini and R.R. Bali. The proceedings were moderated by Seema Samyal.
