Safeguard Interests In Uncertain Times
4/5/2026 9:34:15 PM
While addressing a rally at Thiruvalla (Kerala), Prime Minister Narendra Modi hit out at the Congress by stating that the West Asia conflict had “exposed the mindset of Congress and its allies.”
“The Congress leaders are giving careless statements and are putting the lives of millions of Indian brothers and sisters living in the Gulf region at risk. Lakhs of Kerala residents work in the region, yet irresponsible statements by Congress leaders put their safety at risk. I urge Congress leaders to refrain from making remarks that could endanger Indians living in the Middle East. It is our government’s strong ties with Gulf countries that are helping protect our people in these difficult times,” PM Modi said.
The Prime Minister reminded the Congress leaders that elections will come and go but issues that can put lives of Indians at risk should not be raised for deriving political mileage.
India has a vast diaspora in the Gulf and broader Middle East, with a particularly large concentration from Kerala. These individuals are not just expatriates; they are economic lifelines for their families and significant contributors to India’s foreign remittances.
In such a context, the Prime Minister’s warning underscores a real concern: geopolitical tensions can escalate quickly, and even perceived shifts in India’s stance—whether official or political—may have consequences on the ground.
PM Modi’s argument rests on two key pillars. First, that carelessness or politically motivated statements by opposition leaders could be interpreted internationally as reflective of India’s broader position. Second, that India’s carefully nurtured diplomatic ties with Gulf nations act as a protective shield for its diaspora, and any disruption to this balance could jeopardize their safety. There is merit in acknowledging that foreign policy coherence matters, and mixed signals—especially during conflict—can create confusion.
What emerges from this episode is the need for political maturity across the spectrum. The Prime Minister is right in reminding leaders that elections are transient, but the safety of citizens is paramount. Yet, this principle must apply universally—not selectively. Political leaders, whether in power or opposition, must exercise restraint, precision, and awareness when speaking on sensitive global issues.
Ultimately, India’s strength lies in balancing robust democratic debate with a unified commitment to protecting its people. The lives of Indians abroad should never become collateral in domestic political battles. Instead of levelling accusations the opposition must strive to project clarity, responsibility, and solidarity—values that truly safeguard national interest in uncertain times.
