| Sporting Spirit: Police plans water sports academy in Dal Lake | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, JUNE 1: The Jammu and Kashmir Police is planning to set up a water sports academy in the world famous Dal Lake in Srinagar city. The academy will be first of its kind and will help promote tourism in the state. Talking to reporters during the inaugural ceremony of the 8th All India water sports championship-2009 in Srinagar on Monday, Director General of Police (CID) Ashok Bhan said that the police plans to set up the academy so that water sports are promoted in a big way.
"We are lucky to have the rich water bodies in the state and we can use these water bodies for the promotion of tourism,” Bhan said, adding that police department has plans to establish a water sports academy in Dal Lake.
Bhan hoped that the sports activities will touch new heights if the academy comes up in the famous lake, which is one of the main tourist attractions in the state.
"The setting up of the academy will open up new avenues for the tourism industry in the state and will give necessary boost to the economy of the state," Bhan added.
“Water sports are among the most flourishing and fast evolving disciplines in the world. The state has produced some world class athletes in water sports who have represented the country at international levels," he added.
He said that a seven day long water sports championship starting tomorrow will see as many as 350 players of 18 different state police and central police teams participating in the event.
Three events -- Canoeing, Kayaking and Rowing--- will be held during the championship to be held on the waters of the Dal lake.
The teams who are participating in the championship included Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Madya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttrakhan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Haryana, Orissa, host Jammu and Kashmir, Border Security Force, Central Reserve Police Force, ITBP and SSB.
