| Statement Of Intent | | | Recently, while campaigning in Kerala, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Budget session of Parliament has been extended for three days so that the law enacted in 2023 for providing 33 per cent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies can be implemented from 2029. The Parliament will reconvene on April 16 after a brief recess to pass bills to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 816 so that the women’s reservation law can be implemented at the earliest. Females getting 33% reservation in the Parliament is a big step towards women empowerment. It would be an inspiring step and a dream come true for the fairer sex in the country. What couldn’t happen in 70 years, has been made possible only in 11 years of the regime led by PM Modi. From 2029 the number of women lawmakers will increase in Legislative Assemblies and the Parliament. In essence, the reservation of 33 per cent seats for women is more than a legislative reform; it is a statement of intent. It signals India’s readiness to embrace a more inclusive future where governance reflects the aspirations of all its citizens. Once implemented this reform could well become one of the most defining achievements in the evolution of Indian democracy. For a country as diverse and populous as India, the inclusion of women in legislative bodies is not merely symbolic—it is essential. Women constitute nearly half of the population, yet their representation in Parliament has historically remained disproportionately low. The move to reserve one-third of seats is therefore not just a policy reform; it is a corrective step toward a more balanced and representative democracy. Greater participation of women in lawmaking is likely to bring fresh perspectives to governance, particularly on issues such as healthcare, education, gender justice, and social welfare. Studies across the world have shown that increased representation of women often leads to more inclusive and community-oriented policymaking. The anticipated rise in the number of women lawmakers from 2029 onward is poised to redefine India’s political landscape. It sends a powerful message to millions of women across the country—that their voices matter, their leadership is valued, and their participation is essential to nation-building. |
