Early Times Report
MANDI UDD, Apr 12: Duggar Manch commemorated the birth anniversaries of two eminent stalwarts of Dogri literature-Kavi Charan Singh and Padma Shri Padma Sachdev-at Guda Salathia, Mandi Udhampur, in a dignified and culturally enriching event.
The program was presided over by Nagendra Singh Jamwal (JKAS), while Dr. Kasturi Lal, a member of the Senior Citizens' Assistance Group, attended as the Chief Guest.
In his welcome address, Padma Mohan Singh, President Duggar Manch, paid rich tributes to both literary icons and highlighted their invaluable contributions to Dogri language and literature. Speaking about Kavi Charan Singh, he noted that the poet was born on April 22, 1941, in village Baguna (R.S. Pura), Jammu, to Subedar Major Bhagwan Singh and Bindro Devi. Despite his brief life, he established a unique place in Dogri poetry. His untimely demise at the age of 28 on June 22-23, 1969, due to accidental electrocution, marked a great loss to literature. His poetry collection Jot had already been published, and he had also contributed as a film editor.
Highlighting the literary journey of Padma Shri Padma Sachdev, he shared that she was born on April 17, 1940, in Purmandal, Jammu, into the family of Jaidev Badu. A towering literary figure, she was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1971 for her acclaimed work Meri Kavita Mere Geet. She was also conferred with the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Fellowship and several other honors. A prolific writer, she authored ten books each in Hindi and Dogri. Renowned singer Lata Mangeshkar rendered several of her Dogri compositions. In recognition of her legacy, a women's college in Gandhi Nagar has been named after her.
On the occasion, Duggar Manch honored distinguished personalities for their contributions to Dogri language and literature. Om Goswami and Dr. Padam Dev Singh, Professor in the Department of Dogri, University of Jammu, were conferred with the Kavi Charan Singh Samman. Poetess Krishna Prem and Dr. Surita Sharma were awarded the Padma Shri Padma Sachdev Samman. Journalists Shri Satish Walia (Amar Ujala) and Ashok Sharma (Daily Jagran) were also felicitated for their role in promoting Dogri language through media.
