Dowry death: Woman convicted, sentenced to 6 years RI

Rajouri, June 01 A local court convicted a womanor instigating her daughter-in-law to commit suicide and sentenced her to go regrious imprisonment of six years with fine.
Additional Sessions Judge Rajouri Sanjay Parihar passed the conviction and sentence order in a case titled State V/s Amro Kour and other. While the main accused Amro Kour wife of Pretam Singh was convicted under section 306, 498-A RPC the other accused Ravail Singh son of Bhagat Singh, Gurmeet Kour D/o Pretm Singh and Inderjit Singh were acquitted of the charges as the prosecution failed to prove the guild against them.
The court after hearing the Public Prosecutor Mirza Mukhtiar Ahmed, advocate, and defense counsel observed that the while the prosecution has failed to prove charges of cruelty and abetment of suicide against other accused, the acts of persistant cruelty upon deceased which instigated her to end her life stand proved against Amro Kour, mother-in-law of the deceased. “I therefore prounce the accused guilty of the offence punishable u/s 306, 498-A RPC”.
On the quantum of sentence the court observes, “It is no denial of the fact that such instances of harassment being meted to newly married womn forcing them to end life in such painful manner are on the rise, so the circumstances projected by the defence counsel are not of a nature to invite leninent view to be taken in the imposition of sentence”.
The accused has been sentenced to undergo rigrous imprisonment of sic years for offence under section 306 RPC alongwith fine of Rs 5000 and imprisonment of two years for offence under section 498-A and fine of Rs 2000. Both the sentences will run concurrently, the court observed further.

As per the prosecution case on May 22, 2000 a woman Rita Kour W/o Jernail Singh of village Narian tehsil Nowshera was shifted to GH Hospital Pahaliana after she suffered 95 per cent burn injuries. The woman made a dying declaration alleging that the accused were subjecting her to torture and cruelty for not bringing mattresses with her dower and not obtaining land from her parents. The mother of a seven year old girl told the police that her husband and father-in-law had never made any demand but the accused were making constant demands of dowry.

The victim had poured kerosene on her and set herself on fire. She breathed in the hospital on the next day.
