Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 14: The 12th annual conference of the Jammu & Kashmir chapter of the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) - JAKASICON 2026 - was inaugurated at AIIMS Jammu, marking the beginning of a three-day academic extravaganza. Organized by the Department of General Surgery, AIIMS Jammu, the conference brought together leading surgeons, academicians, and postgraduate trainees from across the country, creating a vibrant platform for exchange of knowledge, innovation, and surgical expertise. The event was conducted under the patronage of ED & CEO AIIMS Jammu, Prof. (Dr.) D. N. Sharma. The organizing team was led by Dr. Maria Kapoor (Organizing Chairperson) and supported by Dr. Sushma Bhardwaj (Co-Organizing Chairperson), Dr. Varun Dogra (Organizing Secretary), Dr. Julie Singh (Treasurer), and Dr. Suneha Kumari (Co-Organizing Secretary). The chief guest for the inaugural ceremony was President of ASI, Prof. (Dr.) D. Maruthu Pandian, who emphasised ethical values in surgical practice during his address. Prof. (Dr.) Madhumita Mukhopadhyay, Treasurer of ASI, and Prof. (Dr.) D. N. Sharma were the Guests of Honour for this event. Prof (Dr) Madhumita, highlighted the pivotal role of such conferences in fostering academic growth and improving surgical outcomes. Prof. (Dr.) D. N. Sharma, while addressing the fraternity, delivered a lecture on the role of brachytherapy in breast cancer, which was one of the highlights of the conference. The inaugural function also witnessed the presence of several distinguished members of the surgical fraternity from various prestigious institutes across the country. The conference featured an extensive and diverse scientific programme spanning key domains of modern surgery. Sessions on breast surgery, endocrine surgery, hernia repair, hepatobiliary surgery, thoracic surgery, and colorectal surgery were conducted by nationally renowned experts. The event witnessed insightful discussions on breast cancer management, including evolving concepts in oncoplastic surgery, followed by sessions on endocrine surgery and advanced hernia techniques. The subsequent days covered topics on Artificial Intelligence in surgery, ethical considerations in surgical practice, and minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques. The conference also included panel discussions, debates, and prestigious orations, focusing on both clinical excellence and professional ethics. A major highlight of JAKASICON 2026 was the active participation of postgraduate students and young surgeons through paper presentations, poster sessions, award competitions, and surgical quiz. These sessions provided an invaluable opportunity for budding surgeons to showcase research and engage with experienced mentors. In addition to academic sessions, multiple hands-on workshops were conducted on coloproctology, advanced wound and stoma care, open and endoscopic suturing, and Basic Life Support (BLS) training. These workshops aimed to bridge the gap between theory and practice, enhancing surgical skills in a structured learning environment.
