| Meira resigns, to become Speaker | | | AGENCIES New Delhi Jun 1: Meira Kumar tonight resigned from the Union Cabinet to pave the way for her election as the first woman Speaker of the Lok Sabha. A communiqu from Rashtrapathi Bhavan said that President Pratibha Devisingh Patil has accepted her resignation as Water Resources minister and her portfolio will be looked after by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Sixty-four-year-old Meira's resignation comes in the wake of her meeting with Congress President Sonia Gandhi who conveyed to her the Party's decision to nominate her to the post of Speaker, the election to which is slated for June three.
