| PM willing to discuss autonomy, self-rule with people of Kashmir | | Justifies joint mechanism to counter terror | | Nainital, Sep 24 Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said he was prepared to discuss all issues, including the question of autonomy and self-rule, with the people of Jammu and Kashmir. "We are willing to discuss all issues with the people of Jammu and Kashmir, including relations between the Centre and the state," he said at a joint press conference with Congress President Sonia Gandhi at the conclusion of a two-day conclave of Congress Chief Ministers here. He was asked for his comment on the reported statement of former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah that the state should be granted autonomy and that of his successor Mufti Mohammed Sayeed advocating self-rule for the state. Earlier, in his concluding remarks at the Chief Ministers' conclave, Dr Singh said the North-East and Jammu and Kashmir had special problems. "Terrorism and insurgency had to be handled properly and effectively. Rejecting as "absolutely baseless" the criticism of Indo-Pak joint mechanism to counter terrorism, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said the institutional framework had been been put in place precisely to test Islamabad's sincerity in dealing with the menace. India, he said, was committed to resolve all outstanding issues with Pakistan, including Jammu and Kashmir, through the process of dialogue. Addressing a joint press conference with Congress President Sonia Gandhi here at the conclusion of a conclave of Congress Chief Ministers, Dr Singh said he had recently had a fruitful meeting with Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf in Havana on the margins of the NAM Summit. |
