| 30 bogus voters held in Hazratbal | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jun 2: With the authorities having made all arrangements for polling in Hazratbal segment on Wednesday, Police tonight claimed to have seized bus No: JK03-3781 and arrested in it 30 bogus voters at Habak Crossing. Sources said that all of these “bogus voters” had been ferried into Hazratbal all the way from Kokernag area of South Kashmir. Police did not reveal party affiliation of the detained bogus voters.
National Conference candidate, Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, is facing a triangular contest in Hazratbal with PDP’s Asiya Naqash and an Independent cxandidate, Mufti Nazim-ud-din Massarat, who has retired as a Divisional Forest Officer and floated ‘Save Srinagar Front’. By-election in Hazratbal had become necessary in the wake of the resignation of the elected MLA, NC’s Dr Farooq Abdullah, who was subsequently elected as a member for Rajya Sabha and finally as a member for Lok Sabha in the lately conducted Parliamentary elections. Dr Abdullah had established lead of 4200 over PDP’s Asiya Naqash in the general Assembly elections held in December 2008 but in the Lok Sabha elections, PDP’s Maulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari, scored a lead of 2,000 votes over NC’s Dr farooq Abdullah in Hazratbal segment. While PDP has better prospects in a situation of Hurriyat-sponsored boycott in Hazratbal which has over 10,000 Shia voters, NC’s prospects will depend on turnout of over 20% particularly in Sunni-dominated Soura locality. |
