| Pak links Kashmir to peace with India | | | AGENCIES Islamabad, June 02: Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Tuesday raked up the Kashmir issue again by linking the resolution of the contagious issue with India to peace and stability in the South Asian region. In a televised press conference, the Pakistan PM said, “Kashmir holds the key to durable peace in the region. Pak remains committed to finding a just resolution to the dispute in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions and aspirations of the Kashmiri people.” Gilani added that Pakistan wants to engage India in a constructive and purposeful dialogue to resolve Kashmir issue. “It must be resolved through sincere dialogue for socio-economic development of the South Asian region”, he added while inviting New Delhi to the negotiation table. The Pak PM listed the Srinagar- Muzaffarabad bus service and commencement of cross-LoC trade as Kashmir-related confidence building measures implemented during the past few years. "Following the Mumbai incident, India has put a pause on the composite dialogue. Pakistan has stressed the need for engagement and resumption of the composite dialogue. "We have pressed upon India that focus of the efforts of the two countries should remain on countering terrorism which is the real issue and not mutual recrimination," Gilani said. Gilani hoped that the peace process would resume soon and "become result-oriented in addressing all outstanding issues, including J&K". Gilani also accused the Indian side for its lack of seriousness in the amicable resolution of all long-pending issues of conflict between the two nuclear states. In an open attack on the Indian government, Gilani accused New Delhi for forcibly crushing the voices of Kashmiri people. To further provoke India, he said that Islamabad is firm in its moral, diplomatic and political support to the Kashmiri’s people in their, what he called as crusade for freedom. However, it’s very clear that Gilani’s statements coming just hours after Mumbai terror attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed - chief of the hard-line Islamist organisation Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) - who was detained following 26/11 was released by the Lahore High Court, points to the apparent diversionary tactics by the Pakistani establishment. By bringing out the Kashmir issue once again and calling for its resolution, Pakistan is clearly looking to deflect any negativity that may arise by Saeed’s release. It has been Pakistan’s endeavour all along that the Kashmiri issue be internationalised. Moreover, Pakistan would be looking to prove a point to the US that now that it is acting substantially against the Taliban in the Af-Pak area, it would now expect the White House to interfere in the Kashmir dispute – something the US had been consistently refusing put its hands into.
