| Nearly 20% vote in curfewed Hazratbal | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, JUNE 03 – Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), J&K, Mr. B. R. Sharma today said that about 20 per cent polling was recorded in Hazratbal Assembly bye-elections, which went to polls today. He said polling was peaceful with no untoward incident reported from anywhere across the constituency. This betters the voter turnout of 7.12 per cent recorded in 2002 Assembly polls as well as 14.62 recorded in this Assembly segment of Srinagar Parliamentary constituency in the recently-held elections. The Chief Electoral Officer said that these were tentative figures as final figures will be available only after receiving Presiding Officers’ diaries from all the polling stations of the constituency. The Chief Electoral Officer said polling was by and large peaceful and no untoward incident was reported from any part of the constituency. “Some political parties registered few complaints which, after verification, were found baseless”, Mr. Sharma said, adding the Communication Plan drawn up for the polls was fully functional to check smooth and hassle-free conduct of polls. The CEO said that in order to ensure free, fair and transparent poll, the Election Commission had appointed an Election Observer to oversee the poll process. “Another 73 Micro Observers had also been deployed at various polling stations to ensure that polls are held in a free and fair manner”, the Chief Electoral Officer said, adding there were no reports of EVM malfunctioning from any of the 119 polling station set up in the constituency. Sharma said 502 migrants also exercised their franchise at Jammu and Udhampur polling stations. Of these, 500 voters cast their ballot at Jammu while only two exercised franchise at Udhampur. The CEO said that counting will be held at NIT, Hazratbal on June 7.
