| Various organizations observed World Environment Day | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 5 In connection with the World Environment day, an impressive rally was taken out by the Department of Students Welfare, Department of Environmental Sciences and officers of the NSS Coordinator Jammu University in association with the Department of Environment and Remote Sensing and the State Pollution Control Board Jammu at Jammu University Campus. Vice Chancellor, Jammu University Prof. Varun Sahni who flagged off the rally said that Pollution prevalent in our environment is relentlessly on the rise, despite some corrective measures. It is at present, on of the major problem s being faced, not only be one nation but by the entire world as the horrendous effects of the environmental pollution, is harming the whole mankind. He further said that it is the duty of all, whether as an individual or in collective capacity to save the environment. The faculty members, officers, Staff, Research Scholars and the students, were carrying the banners and the placard with slogans such as “One person’s sound is another’s headache” , “ Say no to polythene bags”, “Help the Mother Earth”, Together we can save the Earth”, “wood is good but the tree is better” and “Think Green Go Green” etc. The main aim of organizing the rally was to aware the people about the hazards of pollution especially about the polythene bags in wake of the recent order of the Government imposing ban on the manufacturing and use of polythene bags. Meanwhile Chaman Sandesh Kender, NGO today organized an awareness programme on Environment day at SR Public School to motivate the student to save the environment. Speaking on the occasion, General secretary of the organization Ritu Chaman gave a brief account of environmental problems faced by the society in terms of the hazards of global warming, depleted water reservoir, increase in temperature, melting of glaciers and turning of fertile land into deserts. Principal of the School highlighted the importance of the trees and plants in the lives of the mankind and asked the students to work for pollution free environment An Essay writing Competition on the theme “ Your Planet needs you unite to combact climate change” was organized at Ranbir Higher Secondary school to mark world Environment Day . The competition was held under the supervision of the Principal of the school Natha Ram. The lecture was delivered by the Omesh khar who in his lecture told the students about the importance of the preservation of environment fro sustainable development.. The programme was organized by Bio Science department of the institution. Meanwhile, Directorate of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing (J&K) today conducted Debate competition at RRL High school on the topic “Environmental Pollution today. Deputy Director IIM, Dr. YS Bedi was the chief guest on the occasion while the Environment Soil Conservationist, RC Sharma presided over the function. First prize went to Vasu while, second and third prize was bagged by Taban and Kirti. Speak India Environmental Foundation working for protection of environment from the last 5 years organized a awareness programme on the eve of World Environment Day at Govt Hr sec school Hatli kathua.in this event a debate competition was organized by the said organization in which student of the said school participated. Ravinder Singh salthia was the chief guest while Sarpanch Om parkesh Sharma was the guest of honour, Dinesh Sangra vice principal presided over the function In the end a mementoes were given to the students namely varinder Singh, Arushi Sharma, Mamta Devi, Sapana Devi, Sonika Sharma Rajni devi, koshik Sharma and the worthy chief guest. To observe the World Environment Day -09 a painting competition was organized for the special children i.e. hearing handicapped (deaf and dumb) students who even excelled over normal students in a painting competition. The painting competition on the subject ‘Climate Change’ organized as a part of National Environment Awareness Campaign Project was organized at Jammu, in which students for hearing and speech impaired, both boy and girl students from school for handicapped being run by J&K Samaj Kalyan Kandra along with normal students from some other schools in the city participated. The painting competition was split in three groups, no. 1 junior group from class 1 to V, no. 2 senior group class 6th to 8th and no. 3 amateur class 9th to 10th In all the three groups the handicapped children displayed their talent to the best.Bushan Kesar reputed artist of the state acted as a one man judge at the competition,. Inderjeet Khajuria President Samaj Kalyan Kendra gave way the prizes to the students who distinguished themselves in the competition. The speech impaired children, who won prizes out numbered the normal children. While Savera a NGO in collaboration with Eco sanitation Welfare Council Nanak Nagar today organized an programme to celebrate the World Environment Day. The programme was organized under the supervision of Dr Gurmeet and Joginder Singh from 72nd Btn. CRPF. On this occasion, the members of the NGO and other social organizations watered the park at sec-2 Channi Himat. In his message Dr Gurmeet said that as the most of the parks in Jammu are in shambles as no one is there to look after them. It is our duty to preserve them by watering them or by taking care of it. He also added that since the deforestation is going on unabated so there is a need to at least grow more trees to save the environment. He also added that the govt should prepare a plan so that mass involvement of people is ensured to plant at least on tree by each an every family of the country once every year resulting into plantation of more than twenty crores of trees every year . The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Local Centre celebrated “World Environment Day” on 5th June, 2009 at Institutional Complex, Channi Himmat, Jammu by holding a Seminar on theme topic “Your Planet Needs You - Unite to Combat Climate Change”. Dr. C. M. Seth, Environment Consultant for Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board and Former Chairman of J&K State Pollution Control Board was the Chief Guest on this occasion. The seminar was presided over by Er. J. B. S. Johar, FIE, former Chairman of The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Local Centre. The seminar was attended by a large number of engineers from various departments and organisations. An environmental day was observed at Headquarters Northern Command, Udhampur. Many activities were conducted at the military garrison. Defence spokesperson stated that these included preparation of pits for saplings and planting of hedges, disposal pits for biodegradable waste at various colonies, and a drive for all military vehicles to undergo emission checks. The children of the station also took active part in the ‘Green Day’ ecological march to create awareness about the preservation of ecology and environment in these budding citizens of tomorrow. Various military units have adopted local villages where lectures were conducted with a view to educate the local populace about cleanliness, use of eco friendly bags & disposal of plastic waste. The complete station observed a ‘save electricity’ day by restricting the use of all electrical appliances and air conditioners, thereby earning carbon credits for the Army, spokesperson said adding that finally a movie “Inconvenient Truth” was screened at the Dhruva Auditorium to educate the viewers on global warming & its effects. As part of world environment day a drawing competition was organized at boy higher secondary school Leh for senior and junior students on the topic ‘Environment challenges- human perspectives’ and ‘surrounding environments’ here today. About 20 students from various schools of the district took part in the competition. Chief executive Councilor LAHDC, Chering Dorje who was the chief guest highlighted the environment problems facing at present, while Dy. Commissioner A.K. Sahu in his address expressed concern over the change in climate and receding of glaciers. Among others present on the occasion were nodal officer, state pollution control board, Dr. B. Balaji, wild life warden Jigmet Tapka, and SSP, Leh S.R. Samuel.
