Early Times Report NEW DELHI, May 29: The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation has said it imposed a penalty on the contractor and took the concerned staff off duty after a viral video showed them washing plates and bowls inside a train toilet. The video, allegedly shot by a passenger on the Mumbai-Kochi Duronto Express, went viral on several social media platforms, following which the IRCTC initiated action. "Regarding the 24/05/26 incident, prompt action was taken, a penalty was imposed on the service provider, and the concerned staff were taken off duty," the IRCTC said. "Passenger safety is paramount. IRCTC upholds rigorous hygiene protocols and acts decisively against any breach," it said. In the video, a catering staff member can be seen cleaning plates and bowls inside the train toilet and stacking them in a basket kept on the lid of the western-style commode. IRCTC officials said catering firms contracted to serve food to passengers on various trains are regularly counselled to maintain high standards of hygiene. "These staff members who serve food to passengers are regularly mentored and trained in hygiene practices. Whenever such cases are brought to our notice, we immediately take action by imposing penalties and taking other necessary measures," an official said.
