| Shutdown likely to affect cherry and apricot export | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, June 5 Cherry and apricot cultivators in Kashmir are a worried lot due to the ongoing unrest and shutdown may hit their trade. Official sources in the Horticulture Department said that since cherry and apricots are highly perishable even a day's delay in export could result in heavy losses. Sources said that cherry cultivators sell over 20 per cent produce within the state and the rest is exported. According to these sources cherry and apricot worth about Rs.25 to Rs.30 crores are exported each year. Number of cultivators said that they had started harvesting cherry and apricot and within next one month the entire cherry crop will be reaped. They said if the unrest continued "we may lose several crores of rupees." Another cherry dealer in Srinagar said that he had been able to sell over 200 boxes of cherry to visitors staying in hotels and houseboats in the city during the last five days. He said prior to the shutdown "my shop used to be visited by a large number of excursionists from Pune and Gujarat for purchasing cherry,apricot and dry fruits." He said that fruit dealers in Mumbai and Delhi have already paid part of the money in advance for the export of a several hundred boxes ode, cherry and apricot. He said "the current unrest and violence may neither allow our suppliers to complete harvesting nor we be able to export it meaning a big loss to our trade. Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
