Early Times Report MANDI GOBINDGARH, June 5: Desh Bhagat University celebrated World Environment Day 2026 with great enthusiasm through a series of environmental awareness and sustainability initiatives organized by The Agrim Club, Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences in association with Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India, Hara Punjab Khara Samaj, Swachh Bharat Cell, and Unnat Bharat Cell of Desh Bhagat University. The programme was graced by Dr. Zora Singh, Chancellor, and Dr. Tajinder Kaur, Pro Chancellor, whose presence inspired students and staff to actively contribute toward environmental conservation and sustainable development. The event welcomed Anant Jot Kaur, Forest Range Officer, Sirhind, as Guest of Honour, along with Narinder Singh, Beat Officer, and Nirmal Singh, Block Officer. Addressing the gathering, the dignitaries emphasized environmental protection, afforestation, biodiversity conservation, and responsible utilization of natural resources. The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. H. K. Sidhu, Director, Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences, who highlighted the role of educational institutions in promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices. As part of the celebration, Dr. Ajay Gupta presented a documentary on Save Water with special reference to the Ganga and Yamuna Rivers, creating awareness regarding water conservation and ecological responsibility. Dr. Avinash, Nodal Officer, presented a summary of environmental and sustainability activities conducted during the previous fifteen days and demonstrated the official portal where reports and documentation of all activities had been uploaded. A major highlight of the event was the plantation drive under the Green Campus Initiative, jointly conducted by the Forest Department team and Desh Bhagat University. Plantation of Murraya koenigii (Karri Patta), Pongamia pinnata (Karanj), Moringa oleifera (Suhanjan), and Syzygium cumini (Jamun) was undertaken within the university campus and adopted villages to promote green cover and community participation. Participants also took a Green Pledge for Environmental Protection, reaffirming their commitment to sustainable living and environmental conservation. Be Part of the Solution, Not the Pollution." The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. H. K. Sidhu, reaffirming the university's unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and continued efforts toward fostering ecological awareness among the youth. |
