Dr. Deepak Dogra in his latest Book ‘Towards Managing Diversity’ released at India International Centre New Delhi on 2nd June 2009 writes how relevant Diversity Management in Corporate is…
Dr. Armin Bruck, CEO Siemens who was also Chief Guest for the occasion released latest book of Dr. Deepak Dogra, entitled ‘Towards Managing Diversity: Cultural Aspects of Business Environment’ at India International Centre New Delhi on 2nd June 2009. Other dignitaries present during the occasion included Prof. Ishwar Dayal, Founding Director IIM Lucknow Mr. Pradeep Gupta CEO of Cyber Media, Mr. Arbind Kumar CMD, NPCC India, Mr. Dr. YC Halan Resident Editor Financial Express & Times of India etc.
While releasing the book Dr. Bruck said that business world is becoming increasingly global on the one side and fostering a fierce competition from emerging local players on the other. He emphasized that there is a need to define new breakthrough concepts that can complement the established tools of permanent improvement – in order to create a sustainable and competitive advantage for multinational companies (MNC). He pointed out that one concept that has recently evolved is Diversity Management and it adds value to the ‘being global and acting local’ strategy of many MNCs, and offers a promising answer in that direction. However, an in-depth understanding of the incredible ‘Power of Diversity’ in business is yet to be established for organizations to fully leverage the concept’s potential. According to Dr. Bruck the author i.e. Dr. Deepak Dogra of Towards Managing Diversity has put forth the clarity of this logic as well as the need to adopt diversity as an approach in business management. Bruck also emphasizes that “Managing diversity also involves leveraging and using the cultural differences in people’s skills, ideas and creativity to contribute towards a common goal and doing it in a way that gives the organization a competitive edge”, is a wonderful and illuminating way to describe the needs and opportunities of a diversity approach in Business Management.
Prof. Ishwar Dayal opines about the book in his preview that Diversity among employees in work organisations is no longer a casual or chance occurrence. It is actively promoted by many organisations in the west. According to him, Dr. Deepak Dogra has rightly emphasized that diversity for it to be a source of improving performance has to be consciously managed and this is so because people do not set aside their cultural values, life style preferences, specially their identities in working life. The richness of cultural experiences could wisely be used with advantage in work life. India has the most diverse population which is also reflected in work organisations, but we have managed it by containing diversity, not for enhancing decision making processes.
Mr. Arbind Kumar, Chairman & Managing Director, National Projects Construction Corporation, India conveyed that this book not only discusses entire gamut of diversities in terms of gender, culture, religion etc. but analyses the intrinsic properties and gives fine tips to manage diversities in all kinds of situations so as any organization can best utilize these in achieving excellence in compatible and cooperative manner to serve customers, societies and world at large. Therefore, it is essential read for manager of any corporate entity transcending to be Multinational.
This book draws the inferences of western experiences in managing diversity by the organisations through extensive review of literature as well as diversity practicing organisations in the west and that of their Strategic Business Units (SBUs) in India. It is clear that in most of the western countries the diversity not only includes gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, and religion, but also includes disability, age, marital status, immigration status, and sexual orientation. But in case of India, the main diversity categories are gender, religion, ethno-linguistic region and whether individuals belong to one of the traditionally dominant ‘Forward Castes,’ or one of the traditionally excluded ‘Scheduled Castes’ or ‘Scheduled Tribes,’ or the large ‘Other Backward Castes’ grouping. It is only through understanding diversity that businesses can achieve equality and cohesion in the workplace. Towards Managing Diversity provides a perspective of diversity in competitive organizations. Moot issue is not that of Indian Private sector refraining so far from implementing any diversity management related initiatives but need for the management of Indian private sector organizations to understand diversity related cultural imperatives in right perspective. Chapters on Cultural Aspect of Business Environment, Need for Managing Diversity, Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity, HR Interventions, Best Practices and the Indian Perspective heightens the awareness of various diversity issues which are important resource for human resource the management professionals. Two chapters devoted to the behavioural aspects from individual and group perspective are also centralized from human resources cultural perspective in this book particularly, when diversity refers to the co-existence of employees from various socio-cultural backgrounds within the organization.
