| Horror on roads | | | Shariq Nabi Doda, June 06-The poor layout and ill management of roads have made hundred of homes headless and children’s orphans in the mountainous Jammu and Kashmir. Alone in erstwhile Doda district hundreds of persons lost their life in tragic accidents during the last six- seven months and most of these accidents occurred because of poor road conditions and over-loading. It is astonishing that after every accident, ministers claim that stern action will taken against contractors and law violators, but with the passage of time every thing gets washed away. The National Highway 1B connecting the twin districts of Doda and Kishtwar presents a horrible picture. The boulders lying over the Neeru Bridge for the last one month are yet to be removed as no one seems to be concerned about the smooth flow of traffic on this vital highway and security of the people. Moreover the structure is in dilapidated condition and its railing is broken with the sliding rubble as a result bridge is weakened. It is worth mentioning that on February 25 and May 4, this year 44 and 32 persons were killed in these two separate accidents that were occurred because of delay in clearing roadside rubble and narrow tracks. Since the commissioning of Baglihar Hydro Electric Project the level of river Chenab has risen as a result cracks were observed over the highway at Nephali, Korapani and Assar. It is not the only location where authorities are not paying any heed. If talked about the stretch from Assar onwards to Kishtwar the road condition is such that passengers throughout the way remember the Almighty for their safe journey. The reports about the two fatal accidents at Galgandher (Doda) and Bandarkote (Kishtwar), which claimed 76 lives, clearly indicated carelessness of the district administration and road constructing agency who had not taken timely measures as suggested by the traffic police about making of parapets, fixing of iron railings etc. From Assar to Thathri almost there are twenty such locations where different agencies have taken up construction work which is not possible to get accomplished in time. People are suggesting that instead of taking up work over 20 locations the authorities should first accomplish part of it and then take on further to avoid less damages to the road.
