| ‘Teri corporate environmental award to NHPC | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 8: NHPC limited, India’s premier hydro power, a schedule ‘A’ ‘Mini Ratna’ company has been conferred the ‘Teri Corporate Environmental Award 2009’ instituted by the energy and resources institute (TERI), in recognition of corporate leadership efforts towards environmental management and sustainable initiatives. Chairman and managing director, NHPC S.K. Garg received the award from Pratibha Devi Singh Patil, president of India at the 8th TERI corporate awards 2009 held at, Vigyan bhawan, New Delhi. NHPC’s case study titled “Post-construction environmental & social impact assessment study of uri power station (480 MW) Jammu and Kashmir which was undertaken to ascertain the effectiveness of various environmental and social safeguards implemented at the power station was evaluated by TERI research professionals for this award. For the very first time in hydro sector, the innovative biotechnological approach for rejuvenation of muck dumping sites cubic meters of excavated material was dumped. Several other measures carried out by NHPC for safeguarding the environment at the URI power station, effectively fulfilled various parameters as programme commitment, scientific research & technological innovation and pollution prevention.
